What If Solar Drying Only Had to Finish the Easy Part?

What If Solar Drying Only Had to Finish the Easy Part?

Solar drying has one major challenge:

It is often asked to remove the hardest water first.

When sludge enters a Solar Dryer at 80โ€“85% moisture, the system must deal with high viscosity, long residence time, odor, sticking, large drying areas, and strong dependence on weather conditions.

BLUEWINโ€™s integrated ELODE + Solar Dryer process changes that order.

ELODE first treats the difficult-to-dewater moisture range through an electric-field-based, non-thermal mechanism.

In approximately 90 seconds, sludge can typically be reduced from 80โ€“85% moisture to around 45โ€“55% moisture, depending on sludge characteristics and operating conditions.

But the real advantage is not only moisture reduction.

ELODE transforms dense and sticky sludge cake into a porous, micro-cracked, flake-like structure.

These internal pathways increase the effective surface area, shorten the moisture migration distance, and allow residual water to continue moving and evaporating during transfer.

In an actual field case:

Belt Press: 15% DS

ELODE Outlet: 45% DS

After Conveyor Transfer: 52% DS

During conveyor transfer alone, the moisture content decreased from 55% to 48%, without a separate high-temperature heat source.

Based on the same mass balance, ELODE and the transfer stage removed approximately 85.4% of the total moisture-removal burden before the sludge entered the Solar Dryer.

This means the Solar Dryer only needed to handle the remaining 14.6%.

This creates a completely different drying concept:

โ€ข Smaller drying area

โ€ข Shorter residence time

โ€ข Reduced mixing and raking demand

โ€ข Lower odor and dust risk

โ€ข Greater resilience to seasonal climate changes

โ€ข Simpler operation and maintenance

โ€ข Better potential for resource recovery

With adequate solar irradiation, ventilation, bed thickness, and residence time, a final moisture level of 10% or less can be designed and verified through site testing.

ELODE removes the difficult water.

The sun finishes the remaining easy water.

This is not simply two machines connected in series.

It is a smarter and more economical order of moisture removal.
